According to Adam Grant in his book Think Again when dealing with ideas and opinions we often fall into three categories:

  • Prosecutors when we dislike someone else opinion and we want to show it is flawed
  • Preachers when we want to highlight the benefits and the strengths of our opinions
  • Politicians when we want to try to mediate, agree to disagree, for our own benefits.

He suggests “Agreeing to disagree” is not a good way, and that we should rather act like scientists, accepting that we might be wrong and happy to be wrong if life shows us we are wrong
